New user please help

My Z 60 does not seem to be picking up small pieces of dirt on the floor. While my unit is vacuuming is the vacuum noise supposed to be happening on hard floors, I know it's supposed to turn on when it goes on carpets.
This is brand new to me and I've only used it twice.
